Just in time for NHD!

Our button design (above) is by Agnes Mazur of Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire. A young woman of many talents--she'll also present the documentary made by her, Callie McCune, and Mona Ghadri, "Carrying the Burden: The Story of Clyde Kennard." Thanks Agnes!

Heads-up Illinois NHD delegation:

We encourage students to introduce themselves to each other via "Comments." Consider telling us about your project and something that excited you or that you found really interesting along the course of your work. What are you most excited about doing at NHD? Do you have special plans about what you want to see & do?

Here's a reminder about our activities:

ILLINOIS ALL THE WAY!
whats with this whole "pastport" thing?

I can't wait for nationals - I'll be taking plenty of photos, and the blog will be a great place to comment on them!

As far as the buttons, I totally appriciate all of the great feedback - we're even considering making special edition "Lincoln is my Homeboy" buttons for posterity.

I can't wait to meet everyone on Sunday, even though I'm gonna be super tired after graduation and the rush to the airport - this is an opporitunity that I can't miss!

Welcome to Mona, Gian, Agnes, Peter, and Ann! The weather is great in College Park, Maryland (meaning NOT swamp...yet). Crystal and I had a great drive here, the back of my wagon loaded down with t-shirts, buttons, frisbees...and pastports.

We stopped in Cleveland for an hour or two. I lived there for four years on the west side of town working with community organizers and unions. In a funny coincidence, on the other side of town, now-executive director of NHD, Cathy Gorn, was at Case Western University where, as a grad student, she helped get NHD started!

Woohoo! Tomorrow is the day (for me, anyway)! See you there, Lisa and Crystal and everyone else! btw, you can now find out your judging time and which projects are in your judging group. Go to the NHD website, click "contest." you will see "senior/junior division times." Do not click on either directly, because only boxes and odd characters will show up. Right-click on either junior/senior, save to deskptop. From the desktop, right-click again, and open with Adobe. The document should pop up. The entries are organized by state, but to search for projects in your judging group, use the "search" function at the top and type in the room number (for performances/docs) or group letter (papers?, exhibits). For ex, I typed in "Individual Exhibit Group E" for mine, and 13 entries came up. Good luck!

hmmm....this mysterious "pastport"...guess you'll have to come eat pizza and end the suspense! See ya there!

p.s. This is the best NHD weather on record in the past 16 years! (Am I dating myself? Yes, my first NHD experience was - believe it or not - in 1990...most of you weren't even BORN yet!)

p.p.s. The fearless Illinois Dorm Crew members are AWESOME! Thank you all - students, family members, and teachers!!

I would also like to thank my mentor, Ms. B, for helping my group and I through the grueling process. She had to pull some teeth sometimes to get us to work, but it was worth it!

Hi to all:
My feet hurt!!!! We have been on the go from arrival on Saturday. It has been beautiful here!! John and I have been to Smithsonian Air and Space Museum, Maryland State House, and the Naval Academy on our own touring expeditions so far.
The History Fair has been beyond my expectations. The campus is expansive and the turtles are everywhere!!!!
Today the Junior exhibits were completed and the boys lived through the process. Ms. B: you would be so proud of them.
Having lots of fun with the parents as well. The boys are trading state buttons with fervor. I think John only needs about 3 more. I met a boy from American Samoa near Fiji. John got his button.
More to write--but we will save it for another day.
Mom of dugluva---OUT.

I know right, why do they even have it, so that we can put fake names in the slots and win nothing?

There are lots of great projects here. My interview went well Monday morning. In the afternoon I took part in an NHD focus group along with a few other kids from around the country where we talked about working on an NHD project. In the evening I hung out at the hotel pool and played water football.

Hi EPS. A trip to DC sounds great. I haven't heard from the 8th grade or Ms Madl. Did you all loose them? Ammar is that your family on the blog homepage in the background?

Hey dogluva how did a Germany button get in there? I thought this was only US National History Day? Is there a History Day in other countries? Slueth it out. Glad you could visit a relative or at least his signature. Genealogy is just a game of hide and seek... they hide and we seek.

At 6:07 AM, Blogger Crystal said...

Hi everyone --

Germany is here because students in the Department of Defense schools overseas participate in the program. This is only the 2nd year that DODEA has had a program, but they are already doing really well - several projects in the finals, which is quite the accomplishment for a novice "state."

Hi EPS
I can't wait to see your button collections, your photos and your smiley faces full of stories. Sounds like success has been had by all. Keep your S.P.I.E.S. balanced with the achievement awards. Konrad and Ammar, enjoy the east coast with your families. Robin, Vi and Rebecca, NNHS summer school awaits. John, it sounds like you'll be the first to find me and fill me in on the fabulous foray at National History Day!
